Prior authorization: permission before the claim pays

Prior authorization is the payer's (or Bridge processor's) review before they will pay. A patient cannot self-file a Medicare GLP-1 Bridge PA.

Updated August 19, 2026 · Educational — not a coverage decision

Meaning

Prior authorization is a yes/no from the payer or demonstration processor before they will cover a listed drug for a listed person and indication.

Who files

A licensed prescriber, often through clinic staff and a vendor portal. The patient supplies facts and signatures. VitalHound supplies an educational checklist.

Bridge versus plan PA

Different addressees. Bridge PA is not a routine Part D PA. Sending the file to the wrong fax is a wasted clock.

Common error

Treating a website badge or a verbal 'you should be fine' as an approval number.

Questions

Is a PA a prescription?
No. You need both a lawful Rx and, when required, an approval.
Does cash need a PA?
Manufacturer cash is not a coverage claim. The clinician still decides whether the drug is appropriate.
Does a denial mean I cannot take the drug?
It means that path will not pay. Other legal paths may remain.
